Christmas gala dinner for lonely elderly people
For the second year in a row, the “Leef je Uit” Foundation and Rotterdam World Gateway (RWG) have organized a Christmas gala dinner for lonely elderly people in Rotterdam. On Tuesday December 19th, a group of 120 elderly were welcomed on the SS Rotterdam for a special evening out.
A tasteful three course dinner was served and meanwhile the elderly people enjoyed several musical performances. Volunteers of the foundation and RWG accompanied the elderly and talked with them as table hosts during the dinner.
Loneliness amongst elderly people is a serious problem in our society and it does not always get the attention it deserves. Since November 2015, the “Leef je Uit” Foundation helps lonely elderly people in Rotterdam. Michel Perridon, founder of the foundation: “I wanted to give something back to the older generation that has rebuilt Rotterdam after the Second World War. That’s why we organize events to let elderly people experience a nice day or evening out.”
In 2016, RWG and the foundation signed a multiannual cooperating agreement. By organizing the yearly Christmas gala dinner, but also tours in the port, RWG tries to contribute to the wellbeing of lonely elderly people. Managing director Ronald Lugthart: “as a real Rotterdam company, RWG is committed to helping people in Rotterdam who struggle at times. It is the older generation that made our city great and shaped it into the beautiful, colorful metropolis it is today. That’s why we want to do something in return.”
Christmas is a time of getting together. Nobody should feel lonely to begin with, but especially not during the holidays. The goal of this yearly recurring Christmas gala dinner is to give special attention to lonely elderly people.
